Course Report

This week we took delivery of our new Toro all electric eTriFlex, lithium-ion battery riding greens mower. The eTriFlex can cut all 18 greens on a single charge and provide a superior cutting performance, floating freely over any terrain.

This energy smart model is operational friendly with obvious noise reductions benefiting not only our players and also nearby residents but also with operational cost savings. The mower carries no hydraulic fluid, engine oil, fuel and utilises all electric components for traction, steering lift and cutting.

The ultimate green, greens machine.

Major Pennants

North Ryde travelled to Dunheved Golf Club last Sunday, 27 February and it was certainly another testing day.  After North Ryde defeated Cumberland 4.5 to 2.5 last week, we were confident we could get a win but unfortunately that wasn't the case. The contest was very close throughout the day with 4 of the matches going down to the 18th Hole. Unfortunately as in most weeks, the home course advantage played a part and eventually North Ryde lost 4 to 3.

A special mention to Fletcher Thompson who played his first game of Major Pennants at the age of 16. Fletcher was 1 under for the day and came up against a very good player who had 4 birdies on the back nine. Unfortunately Fletcher lost 3 & 2, a fantastic effort at a young age showing North Ryde has a good future.  Joseph Lin also remains undefeated with 1 match to go in the season.

Results:

  1. Matthew Gordon - lost 4&3
  2. Jackson Fennell - won 2&1
  3. Luke Cincotta - square
  4. Joseph Lin - won 2up
  5. Alex Sghabe - square
  6. Tom Crockart - lost 2&1
  7. Alistair McKie - lost 1down
  8. Res - Fletcher Thompson - lost 3&2

In the other match in our division Cumberland hosted Manly and that result was 3.5/3.5 which leaves Dunheved in 1st place on 3.5 points, Cumberland in 2nd on 2.5 points and North Ryde & Manly both on 2 points. We are at home this Sunday 5 of March, against Dunheved, 1st tee at 7am. Please come along and support the boys.

On behalf of the Major Pennant team, we want to once more thank our caddies for their efforts and to those members that came out to support us on Sunday. It means a lot to the team.

Junior Program Changes

After more than a quarter of a century of providing incredible coaching and nurturing of Cadets and Juniors here at North Ryde, Joan has decided to hand the reins over.

Just before Christmas Joan approached the Club requesting to step down from the rigours of coaching.  While Joan is not a teaching professional, her program has certainly enthused and started many on their golf journeys.  We are fortunate at North Ryde that we will now be able to call on the skills and experience of Marty, our Head Professional and his team, including the newly appointed Chloe Han, to take over the Cadet and Junior program.  We are grateful that Joan stayed on for the first month of the year (February) to commence the 2023 year program as this allowed us precious time to formulate the successive program and coordinate teaching resources.

Previously Joan was understandably bestowed the honour of Life Membership at the Club for her fantastic contributions.  It is only fitting therefore that now, on the handover of the program that we honour Joan's service and achievements.  Accordingly, we welcome your attendance at the Farewell to be held at Clubhouse on Friday Evening, 17 March 2023 after the Friday Night Meat Raffles where President Mark Mathieson will make a presentation to Joan.

We are happy to announce that Joan is handing the baton to one of her own proteges - Chloe Han.  After first going through Joan's program many years ago, Chloe matriculated on to become a PGA member and teaching professional.  Most recently she has been working and teaching at Strathfield Golf Club.  Marty was successfully able to lure Chloe back to her home Club where she is looking forward to commencing and assisting taking over the Junior Program which is where she first started her golfing journey.  Previously a Junior Champion, Chloe starts on Sunday, 5 March so pop in and say g'day.  Although well known to many of our long-term members, Chloe will enjoy meeting and coaching not only our Juniors but is also available for private lessons.

Water on the Course

With the weather once again heating up next week, it's really important you stay hydrated.

Following the success of the new bubbler located between the 15th Green and 16th Tee, we have ordered and paid for an identical bubbler (with chilled water) to replace the broken unit previously located at the 5th Tee.

While delivery and installation of the new bubbler is expected later this month, we ask that you carry extra water.  In the meantime, we will have a temporary water solution available on the 5th Tee during Member competitions.

Beer Price Update

Dear Members, we are delighted to be able to share some good news regarding the latest beer price increases.

Although our suppliers have had to pass on the 3.7% excise duty increase on beer to the Club, in recognition of the current cost of living pressure which we are all experiencing, the Board have frozen draft prices.

So please join us for the best beer in town at super cheap prices.

Hole-in-One Clarification

We have a long-standing tradition of celebrating our members' successes of hitting the "holy grail" of golf, a Hole-in-One in competition (not during social play). The Board has ratified this general understanding in the By-Laws that we would like to confirm.

For these lucky/skilled members we:

  • Acknowledge their feat in the 19th News & on an honour board
  • Organise a Trophy
  • Give a bottle of Ballantine Scotch (or equivalent) or two bottles of house wine.
The gift of the scotch or wine is for these Members to celebrate and share the success with playing partners and other golfers at the time of the feat in the Club. It may not always be convenient or possible to share a drink at the time, but by special arrangement they may share this celebratory drink within 1 week from the day the Hole-in-One was achieved also within the Club. The scotch or wine is not for taking home. If the Hole-in-One winner has to leave for whatever reason, the bottle must stay and may be consumed by the players still at the Club.

We look forward to having more Holes-In-One to celebrate!

Women's News

Open Day Tuesday 21 March:  The course is looking wonderful, so it will be such a pleasure to welcome guests from many clubs, as well as members from Muirfield Golf Club who will be joining us on the day as their course will be closed.

As it's a shot gun start at 8 am, we will be going upstairs for lunch. We have organised a special menu for the lunch which will be displayed on your table. Seating will be tables of 8 as we will be playing in groups of 4.

The Draw for Open Day - will be done from the sheets in the locker room on Tuesday, 14 March

To clarify the process:

  • Your team's names must be put on the sheet in the locker room so they can be included in the draw.  The draw must be done manually as we have visitors attending.
  • Pay for your visitors ($25) by placing money in an envelope in the locker room with your guest's name and golflink number.
  • Pre-pay your green fees ($18) online by using the App or the website.  This can be done now and should be done before 14 March.  There seems to be some confusion regarding this. When you go to the timesheet labelled "Women's Open Day Registration & Payment" you are only paying your $18 green fee.  This is not registering you for the competition that is done by putting your name on the sheet.

Any problems with the above please get in touch with a Committee Member.

Barbara Evennett - Women's Captain

This priest decided to skip church one Sunday morning and go play golf . He told his assistant that he wasn't feeling well. He drove to a golf course in another city, so nobody would know him. He teed off on the first hole.

A huge gust of wind caught his ball, carried it an extra hundred yards and dropped it right in the hole, for a 450 yard hole in one.

An angel looked at God and said "What'd you do that for?" God smiled and said "Who's he going to tell?"
