Good News! Course Open from Sat 28 May

First and foremost, even if the Course is unable to be played on - your Clubhouse is open for business and we look forward to welcoming you to wine, dine and be entertained.

But the good news is from this Saturday 28 May the course will be OPEN, play will be tee up through the greens and no carts.

Conditions & Weather Status:
The rain we received both last weekend and at the start of the week totalled almost 60mm which was enough to top-up the water table to make the course once again unplayable.  This 'big wet' started in February where we recorded almost 340mm.  Since then, in March we received a phenomenal 590mm which was unfortunately supplemented in April by 200mm and now to date in May, 105mm.  To put March's tally of 590mm into perspective, in both 2018 and 2019 we received a total rainfall in each year of approximately 800mm - that is for each entire year!  Given our clay base, in many areas with every step the mud comes instantly to the surface and it is very soft and not to mention slippery.

Not only are our Green Staff not able to use most of the normal course machinery, they are resorting to tip-toeing around and whipper snipping by hand to try and keep the grass at somewhat manageable levels.  Please see a photo of the result of using machinery too early which was taken across the road at The North Ryde Commons this week.  This piece of ground will take months to recover.

We are constantly monitoring the playability of your course which is communicated on the website.  While we are all suffering the closure of the course for some 54 days, let's hope for more sustained dry weather and a little wind to help keep it open.  With the opening this weekend please be mindful of the very slippery conditions and take care of where you are walking.  While some areas are roped off, there is still a significant amount of water on the ground which will only dissipate with continued fine and hopefully windy weather.

Vets' AGM to be Rescheduled

On Monday 23 May, the Vets once again looked forward to being able to run their annual AGM event and meeting. Unfortunately with further rain over the weekend, they like other fellow golfers were disappointed to be unable to play on the day and accordingly cancelled their AGM.

The Committee will discuss the rescheduling of this event with the Club management and directors. So, watch this space for a new date to be confirmed soon.

Ladies Update

North Ryde Salver, Macquarie Bowl & Autumn Plate:  Once again we are rescheduling the North Ryde Salver.  Maybe the third time we will be lucky and the rain will stay away.

Next Tuesday 31 May we will try again to run the North Ryde Salver (up to daily handicap 34) and Macquarie Bowl (up to daily handicap 29).  These are both stroke events and Maximum Score cannot be used in these events.

At the same time those ladies with a Daily Handicap of 35 and above will be playing the Autumn Plate which is a Stableford event.

I have done the draw using the previous list so please check the timesheet.  If I have omitted anyone or you are unable to play, please email me so that I can add/remove you.

9 Hole Competition:  From Thursday next week and while there are no carts allowed, there will be a 9 hole competition available on Tuesday and Thursday for those ladies who would usually use a cart and are unable to walk the 18 holes.  This 9 hole competition will open Saturday at 5pm for Tuesday and Tuesday at 5pm for Thursday.

Weekend Pennants:  Weekend Ladies are hosting teams from Avondale, Concord, Pennant Hills, Pymble and Roseville for Pennants this Sunday, 29 May. We wish the team good luck in our opening round.

Men's Master Pennants

The NRGC Master Pennant Team is entering its 3rd Week of Competition in a reasonable position. The first round was to be played at Marrickville G.C. but due to the inclement weather it was washed out, resulting in a drawn match and 4 points each.

In the second round NRGC hosted Marrickville G.C. and although our Course was very wet, we were able to complete the match without any further rain interruption. In a very close match, filled with tension over the last few holes the Team managed a 6 -2 victory. This week the Team is away at Northbridge G.C. and the Club will be represented by: Glenn Blundell, Rob Righten, Greg Sheaves, Chris Millard (Captain), Brett Cummerford, Greg Imber, Peter Richardson and Grant Goodhue.

We wish the Team every success in the weeks ahead.

A priest rushed from church one day to keep a golf date. He was halfway down the first fairway, waiting to hit his second shot, when he heard "Fore!" and a ball slammed into his back. Soon, the golfer who had made the drive was on the scene to offer his apologies. When the priest assured him that he was all right, the man smiled.

"Thank goodness, Father!" he exclaimed. "I've been playing this game for forty years, and now I can finally tell my friends that I've hit my first hol-y one!"

Tues 31 May - North Ryde Salver, Macquarie Bowl & Autumn Plate
