A Great Night of Celebration

Last Saturday, 7 October the Club was excited to hold the annual 2023 Commemoration Cocktail Party and Presentation for Club Person of the Year - certainly a great night.

Congratulations to our 2023 Commemoration Cup Winner John Evennett announced by Cup Captain Ben Brown during the evening.

Next we would like to congratulate Russ Fennell who was presented with the 'Club Person of the Year' award for 2023 by our 2022 winner Elizabeth Sung, our Vice President Alex Cicchini and President Mark Mathieson. We were sad not to be able to celebrate this evening also with our other two nominees Norm Spalding and Serg Puz who were both unable to attend. We are very fortunate at the Club to have volunteers such as these three who help make our Club so special, thank you all.

Another winner during the evening was Di Donohoe who was the very happy recipient of the $400 Lucky Door Prize. It was a great evening of music, an endless supply of food, dancing, a few cocktails and laughter amongst friends and fellow members.  Thanks for attending, you all helped contribute to making it a great night.

We look forward to seeing you all in 2024 for this annual event which will actually mark the 75th Anniversary - we are planning on a big celebration!

Course Report

Spring greens and tee renovations were completed five weeks ago with excellent results in near perfect weather conditions. Cutting commenced on the following Monday at 4.0mm, followed with another cut Wednesday with rolling on the Friday. Greens cut back at the normal height of 3.0mm the next Friday.

Early spring water usage is always high with all greens and tee renovations plus extensive fertilising of fairways and roughs, along with pesticide applications which all require large amounts of irrigation to wash in the products.

Fairway condition has been very poor of late, due to lack of rain fall these last couple of months. Therefore, there have been a number of areas that have been thin for a long time and are still struggling to recover even with regular fertilising, plus an extremely dry Autumn and Winter this year has not helped in the lead up into Spring, hopefully we will get back to normal rainfall patterns in the not too distant future.

Currently fairways have all been fertilised, some areas twice to promote strong growth leading into the Club Championships and beyond. At the moment the results are very encouraging with the surface improving rapidly. All close-cut areas are now back to summer heights and we are cutting twice a week.

  • Dam level is above 85% with a loss of just under 1m of water
  • Monthly rainfall of 24.75mm

Firewood:  The Club still has a stock pile of wood for members to access, almost all timber is cut for immediate use with all being easy to load into a car boot or trailer. Pickup is by arrangement, Monday to Friday only during work hours 5.30 am - 2.00pm.

Glenn Bingham - Acting Superintendent

Lady Veterans' Report

The final of the Min Smith Salver was played last Thursday, 5 October.  The day was fine but the wind was blowing a gale, not ideal for playing golf, however our two finalists managed to play some good golf.

The winner was Janet Moffatt who defeated Chris Fisher who was defending the title.

An enjoyable lunch was provided after the final for Janet and Chris, who were joined by last week's two semi-finalists and the Veterans Committee.

Our Veterans' Party Day is coming up on Thursday, 23 November, everyone is welcome to join us for a fun day.

As usual, financial Members will receive a discount, non-members will pay full price for the luncheon. Please place money in an envelope with NAMES in the Veteran's Card box on the bench, in the locker room.

Play 9 holes of golf, followed by the AGM at 12.30pm, lunch at 1pm, presentation of golf winners and trophies at 2pm and lastly the Raffle draw.

Tables of 12, please give names to Cheryl.  Sheets for golf & lunch will go out soon.

North Ryde Golf Club hosted a two day junior camp in the September school holidays.

The coaching camp was attended by 45 NRGC cadets and juniors, as well as 6 PGA Coaches, and a PGA chef.

The camp was co-ordinated by our own Head Coach PGA member Alex Emmerson.  The cadets and juniors had two great days of fun, professional tuition and finished up wanting more.

Huge thank you to the Board of North Ryde Golf Club for allowing us to close 9 holes to accommodate the camp. Also thank you to the Veteran Committee for missing their Monday game and the Ladies Committee for playing off 1 tee on the Tuesday, we certainly could not have held the camp without your co-operation.

Our major prizes ( 5 x $50 vouchers) for the camp were donated by Zappi's Pizza at Epping, thank you so much Zappi, very generous.

We had 6 PGA Members Chloe, Jan, Anthony, Neil, Jake and Alex provide professional coaching for both days, Thank you.

We now have a very healthy 79 cadets and 56 junior members of NRGC and are the envy of many clubs around us.

We hope to hold this camp every year and look to a bright future in pennant matches in years to come, Junior and Major.

Junior Development Committee.
