Major Pennants
North Ryde vs Manly

North Ryde travelled to Manly Golf Club in the return match last Sunday 4 February. I am happy to report that after being beaten the week prior 4 to 3, North Ryde turned that disappointing result around to defeat Manly 4 to 3 in one of the most exciting matches I have ever witnessed.

After the first 3 holes everything was extremely tight with North Ryde up 1, Manly up 1 and all others square. This changed around by the 10th with North Ryde up in 3 matches, Manly up in 4 matches and a number of our guys 2 and 3 down, Alistair McKie went on to record a great 4&2 win his second comfortable win of the season. Alex Sghabe gave us another point with a 2up win, but in other matches Tom Crockart and Michael Hooper had lost leaving the match 2 all.  In the remaining matches both Joseph Lin & Jackson Fennell were 2 down and Luke Cincotta was square so things weren't looking so good. This is when it all changed, Joseph Lin birdied 17 & 18 holing big putts to get a square for the team in a great match, both Joseph and his competitor where well under par for the day, Jackson Fennell won 17 & 18 to also get a square, so we are back in the match at 3 games each with Luke Cincotta square playing 18. Luke went on to win the hole to give North Ryde the 4 to 3 win.

The other match in our division Cumberland hosted Dunheved, Cumberland managed to avenge their loss to Dunheved last week to win 5.5 to 1.5. With Cumberland defeating Dunheved that leaves all teams in our division on 1 point as well as 7 matches each after 2 rounds.

Results

  • Luke Cincotta - won 1 up
  • Jackson Fennell - square
  • Michael Hooper - lost 3&1
  • Joseph Lin - square
  • Alex Sghabe - won 2 up
  • Tom Crockart - lost 1 down
  • Alistair McKie - won 4&2
  • Res. Michael Spackman lost 1 down

On behalf of the Major Pennant team, we want to thank our caddies for their effort and to those Members that came out to Manly and supported the team. It's much appreciated.

Our next match Is Sunday 12 February at 7am against Cumberland at Cumberland, we look forward to seeing you there.

Ben Brown - Vice Captain

Little Corella

Members may have noticed some damage to a few of our fairways from the Little Corella bird.

Little Corellas roost in trees overnight and will fly off to feed early morning and late afternoon. They mainly feed on the ground searching for grain, grass seeds and bulbs. They can be quite destructive, see photo.

They are a protected species in the state of NSW and if they become a serious problem, the best management option is scaring techniques:

Making loud noises, Visual deterrents, bright flashing lights or lasers and other visual scaring products that simulate predators.

We respectfully request members leave this follow-up to the Green Staff.

Golf Dates to Note:

Women's News

Next Tuesday we have a PAR game.  For those who are not familiar with how PAR works please see an explanation on the Golf Documents page on the website.

Renovation Day: The course will be closed on Tuesday, 14th March for renovations.  Muirfield have invited us to play in their competition.  They will play an Individual Stableford and may also have a team event if there are enough players.  Pay on the day at Muirfield.  A sheet is downstairs where you can put your name and golflink number.

Open Day: Tuesday, 21 March is Open Day - Shotgun Start at 8:00am and we will play an Irish Stableford. The sheets are out in the locker room. Guests can be invited ($25 payment and golflink number to be put in the slot in the locker room).  Members will pay $18 to the Pro Shop on the day.  It is not necessary to have a visitor in the team to win. Ladies from Muirfield will join us on this day as they have their course renovations.

Reminders: When playing please remember not to leave your buggy or golf cart in front of the green while you putt.  This prevents the next group from playing their shots until your buggies are moved.

Also please make sure that you rake the bunker after you have had your shot.

Barbara Evennett - Women's Captain

A Welcoming Smile

This week we say 'Hi' to Jordan Kim, another bright and bubbly personality joining our team. Many of you will have already seen Jordan's smiling face at both the main and halfway bars.

After several years of studying ballet in Houston, Jordan came back to her home ground of Gladesville and is studying at Uni working towards becoming a Vet. Although a far cry from Houston, ballet is still a part of her life taking classes to keep fit along with regular gym sessions.

Jordan is busy getting to know everyone and becoming part of the community and like some of our other new staff she is learning the ropes, maybe this could include golf into the future?
