Opening of the 18th

The history books of NRGC will mark Friday 22 April as the successful opening of the long awaited but all-improved 18th.  A healthy crowd of members gathered last Friday to watch two lucky members, Cheryl Ward and Marshall Collier become the first to tee-off on the 18th.  They were closely followed by the Club's two champions, Madi Woodley and Jackson Fennell who effortlessly tried to show us all how it should be done.

The Club incentivised members to become the first to achieve a hole-in-one on the new 18th with a $500 booty.  This honour was taken the day after opening, on Saturday 23 April during the Diggers' Day competition by Steve Smith.  Well done Steve!

The opening of the 18th has been a long time coming but for all who attended on Friday and have subsequently played, the wait has been well-worth it.  Designed by James Wilcher and incorporating the latest matrix system of concrete bunker liners, despite all the recent wet weather, the bunkers have held their form and drained as planned.

Diggers' Day Dinner

Your club proudly hosted the annual Diggers' Day event last Saturday, 23 April.  The tradition of the club is to support Legacy and honour ANZAC day on a Saturday closest to 25 April each year.  In spite of all the recent wet weather, the Club was happy to be opened and unfortunately although carts were not able to be used, 189 members and guests enjoyed playing under a sunny sky.  After golf 121 players attended a recital of the Ode performed by Michael Flaherty and then Howard Peterson signalled the Last Post on his bugle - thank you gentlemen.  Following an impressive dinner and before the exciting entertainment commenced, on behalf of the Club, the Vice President, Alex Cicchini presented a cheque for $3,000 to Legacy.  Legacy was represented on the night by returned serviceman Michael Ward and from frontline services Dave Hudson.

Please continue to support the Friday night raffles, run each week by our enthusiastic band of volunteers, Alex Cicchini, Ross Donaldson, Gordon Edwards and Steve Callaghan as all the proceeds generated go towards running Diggers' Day and the accompanying donation to Legacy.

2022 Gear Cup
Finally, the Gear Cup, one of our annual Major Events was completed on Saturday 23 April.

This event is a 4BBB Handicap Match Play and the Final unfortunately was postponed for a number of weeks due to Course Closures and inclement weather.

The Final was played between the pairings of Matt Gordon and Jarryd Clarke versus Grahame Onley and Chris Millard - the young versus the not so young.

In a very close match where they were 4 down after 5 holes, Matt and Jarryd managed to come good on the back nine to get a 2-1 win.

Congratulations to all who qualified and especially to Matt and Jarryd on a great win.

Footnote:

A very special bit of Sportsmanship deserves a mention.

Prior to the Final being scheduled, it was ruled that no carts would be allowed due to the condition of the Course. Unfortunately, Grahame Onley is unable to walk due to debilitating knee problems.

So, what does Jarryd do, he offers to carry his opponent's clubs for him so that the match can go on.

What an example of true sportsmanship, comraderie and courage.

Fortunately, Grahame was given special permission to use his bike/buggy to compete.

Jarryd, you are a credit to NRGC and your family. More importantly, you should be very proud of yourself.

Etiquette

Anzac Day, at its heart, reminds us gently to recognise and respect the values of comraderie and mateship that Australians of all persuasion are famous for. As members of North Ryde Golf Club, these same values are displayed and reinforced and are the true essence of our great club. We are without exception the most member and guest friendly club in the area.

Recently our club has been fortunate enough to welcome an influx of new members. Some of these members have never been members of golf clubs before and as such are not in touch with the nuances and traditions of our club.

As established members, the opportunity arises for us to guide and assist the newer members with our traditions and etiquette. Whether it's the pace of play, dress code or some other actions that come naturally to us. We respectfully ask that you lead by example and exercise patience, tolerance and empathy when explaining our values to those still learning what it is that sets us apart.

Remembering always, you can't do the right thing if you don't know what it is.

Contributions to this new section of the newsletter is welcome, just email these to the office on office@northrydegolfclub.com.au. We look forward to hearing of any that have been forgotten with time.
