President's Report

There have been several firsts this week; my first full game back since February; my first time to play the new 18th Green; the first week after La Nina, which should bring drier weather for a couple of months; the first prototype of the new carts, which have been on back-order for over a year; and hopefully the first AGM since the new, new normal.

I invite all Members to join your Board and Management on Monday 27 June (next week) for our Club's 73rd Annual General Meeting at 7pm. We hope to share an informative update, answer your questions and enjoy a convivial evening with a snack and drink afterwards.

Once again, I'd like to thank and acknowledge my team who has presided over and managed so many improvements to our Club over the past months, including the 18th Hole, Practice Nets, paths, bunkers, air conditioning and solar panels, to name just a few. Much of this work coincided with trying to stop the course from floating down Lane Cove Road! Well done to everyone.

As we plan for the next horizon, including potential changes to the Balcony and Auditorium, we will keep Members informed and seek feedback. On this, I urge you to speak to Management and your Board and read the 19TH NEWS rather than believe every rumour and scuttlebutt you hear on the Tee! The most recent one I heard was that I was playing at Castle Hill - not true!

This week saw the shortest day of the year and with it we have the annual challenge of getting everyone a game. One of the innovations introduced this year is the 5-Day Membership limited to playing on Sunday-Thursday.  We have welcomed 18 new Members into this category, so please join me in welcoming them. This, along with the additional Monday competitions, has reduced the load on Saturday giving working Members more opportunity to play.

Finally, a warm thank you for the unending support and encouragement over the past 3 years as we look forward to a successful and sustainable future.

Mark Mathieson - President

Course Report

At last with the sunnier weather, the removal and replacement of the damaged kikuyu areas on the fairways is almost complete. A total of approximately 1,000m2 of turf has been replaced.

The 4th fairway, which we use as a nursery for other areas of the course, has had 600m2 of replacement turf laid with the remainder booked for delivery next week.

Each Winter one of our main tasks is checking the bunker drainage and sand depth's, this has now commenced and will take a number of weeks before completion.

Men’s Master Pennant Update

The NRGC Master Pennant Team played their final preliminary round last week against Kareela (Away).

In a very tense match Kareela defeated us 6-2 but these 2 points were enough for us to finish first in our Section and has got us through to the semi-finals of the division.

The semi-final this Sunday 26/6 is being played at Springwood Golf Club against Woolooware Golf Club. With the winning team moving on to the final on Sunday 3/7 with a chance of winning the flag and being promoted to Division 2.

This week the team is away and the Club will be represented by:  Glenn Blundell, Rob Righton, Greg Sheaves, Chris Millard (Captain), John McKie, Brett Cummerford, Greg Imber and Peter Richardson.

On behalf of all members, we wish the Team every success in the Semi-final this Sunday.

Steve Callaghan - Director & Team Manager

Vets' Reminder
We wish to remind our Members, notwithstanding that Club games are now played every Monday, designated Vets' games are those which are held on the 2nd, 4th and 5th Mondays of the month.  It is only those Vets' games that our Members play, which can be accepted as contributing to the required number of games which will earn Members a free ham at our Hams Day each December.  Please keep this in mind.  Thank you.

Eagles Nest Explained...

To many of our members new and old, the Eagle’s Nest remains an unexplained mystery on the results sheet. For those of us unsure, a simple explanation is warranted. An old and proud tradition at our Club, the Eagle's Nest simply explained is jackpot prize for a “Really Close Nearest The Pin” on selected holes in selected competitions.

We have 3 different prize pools namely our Wednesday comp on the 18th hole, Saturday comp on the 6th hole, backed up by the Sunday medley again on the 6th hole. To win the coveted Eagle’s Nest you must first be NTP on the selected hole and be within 30cm of the pin. The prize pool starts at 8 balls and if not won on any particular day, increases in increments of 2 balls each comp until it is won with a maximum prize pool of 60 balls. So there you go. Now you are fully informed there will be increased pressure when you stand on the tee staring down Par 3 glory knowing that the prize you would normally share with your playing partners can be so much more.

Head down, slow swing, and good luck !!
