Super Saturday Winners

Wow, what a really 'Super Saturday' event it was last Saturday, 12th August, with an amazing Quarter-Final win by the Matildas to add to the list of winners being celebrated on the night! It was a super atmosphere, with a large crowd there to cheer on all the winners. The presentation to our monthly golfing winners was made, as pictured above, and our Members' Cash Draw was held. The three winners of the Cash Draw were (pictured above, left to right):  Robert Stubbs - 2nd prize winner of $300, Anna Mun -  1st prize winner of $500 and Dave Thompson, 3rd prize winner of $200.

An impressive night which was juggled well with the band, soccer, presentations and a cash draw. Well done Steve & Alex!

Put the date in your diaries for the next Super Saturday event: 9th September.

Super Seniors Pennants

Last Thursday, 10th August, on yet another perfect day for golf, we played Asquith at Muirfield.  Both teams played well, but it was Asquith who won 5-3. We came close to winning, losing games on the 17th and 18th holes. The winners for North Ryde were Graham Onley, Geoff Rogerson and Warren Clark.

This week, Monday, 14th August, we played Monash at Bayview.  Monash are the top team in our division, with handicaps ranging from 1 to 8! They were far too good for us, winning  8-0.  John Yoo played well, losing on the 18th.

Next Thursday, 24th August we play Oatlands at Asquith. Good luck to all players.

Peter Richardson - Super Seniors Pennants Captain

Vets' Date Change

Would all Members please note that our game on Monday, 25 September is cancelled. It will be held instead the week before, on Monday, 18th September.

This change has been made necessary by a two-day School Holiday Junior Coaching Camp being held at the club, beginning on Monday 25 September.

Would you all please update your Fixtures Book accordingly.  Thank you.

Scott Beatty - Veteran's Captain

Rakes & Bunkers

Fair to say that while we don't intend for our ball to land in the bunker, if it does land there, you want to be given the best chance of correcting the shot in (hopefully!) one stroke.  This challenge will be magnified if the person before you hasn't raked over their footprints/shot, or if they leave the rake in the wrong spot.

Of course, everyone already rakes over their footprints and shot - that is normal etiquette and goes without saying. So, onto rake placement.

While there is no hard and fast rule relating to the placement of rakes in bunkers, the generally expected practice at North Ryde is to leave the rake in the middle of the bunker facing in the direction of the hole, the most flat part of the bunker.  In that way if a ball does enter a bunker, it is less likely to be impacted by a rake facing the same direction and movement of the rake to take a shot is less likely to move the ball.

Meet Lucas Nadile

This week we welcome new staff member Lucas to our Team. Another mad soccer player also playing for his Alma Mater, Holy Cross, alongside Michael, another of our new staff members. Lucas has discovered another passion, (though soccer remains his No 1!) 'Property Economics', starting his degree at UTS this year and loving it.

Lucas is also a local lad with his family home just up the road next to Top Ryde, making it an easy commute to the Club. Although, Lucas will not be walking to the Club for a couple of weeks as his love of soccer has led to a total knee reconstruction. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to him being back with us again soon!

$100 Winner

Last Friday we had the pleasure of meeting Allan Bradley, and presenting him with the $100 Dining and Bar Voucher from the Taylors Winery 'Buy a glass of the Hotelier' competition run last month.

Allan confirmed the Hotelier is certainly a nice drop, having sampled a couple of bottles with friends at the Club, allowing him the chance to enter the competition.

Next time you are in the Club and would like a glass of Shiraz or Chardonnay, try Taylors' Hotelier.

Another Golfing Mishap

One fine day, Jim and Bob are out golfing. Jim slices his ball deep into a wooded ravine. He grabs his 8-iron and proceeds down the embankment into the ravine in search of his ball. The brush is quite thick, but Jim searches diligently and suddenly he spots something shiny. As he gets closer, he realizes that the shiny object is in fact an 8-iron in the hands of a skeleton lying near an old golf ball.

Jim excitedly calls out to his golfing partner 'Hey Bob, come here, I got trouble down here." Bob comes running over to the edge of the ravine and calls out "what's the matter Jim?" Jim shouts back in a nervous voice "Throw me my 7-iron! You can't get out of here with an 8-iron!"
