Course Report

A quick update with the work happening around the golf course. It has been exciting times for the Club over the last few months, with many projects being completed to ensure the golf club is constantly improving to provide our members and guests with an enjoyable experience at the Club.

The major pathway construction has now been completed from the 1st tee, cafĂ© entrance and along the 10th tee. I hope you are now all enjoying the new access, which is much safer and aesthetically pleasing. I thank you all for following signage and ropes to get you all around the major works safely.

I am sure you have now seen a lot of turfing happening around the course. We have completed over 1500m2 of turfing to repair the designated access points that essential construction vehicles used to complete the works on 14th, 18th and the Clubhouse. You will also see turfing in fairways being conducted. These fairways are the 1st, 15th and 16th. In our work program we will be continuing to work our way around the course to identify and repair other areas. I ask that these areas be treated as a GUR, staff will have these painted with white lines.

Over the coming weeks you may notice certain turf discoloration in the couch tees, couch fairways / green surrounds. The reason for this is that an application has been made to those areas to help eliminate foreign grasses which have germinated in those surfaces. The main grasses that we are targeting are kikuyu grass and winter grass. The couch grass which is the host plant will not be affected.

The 14th green is establishing well. I am happy with the progress of the grow in phase. We are now cutting all turf in the work zone. The green is currently being cut at 7mm. This green is still on track to be opened around the middle of June.

The 18th green has had significant work conducted on it. We took the opportunity to rectify a few issues with the green such as softening the slope which runs through the middle of the green. I'm sure as a golfer you are all going to appreciate. The green was seeded Monday 25th of March with the grow in period usually a 12-week period. We had a slight setback when the course received a huge downpour of rain, 220mm of rain fall in a 24-hour period. This did create a wash out on the green which we rectified after the storm including re seeding the impacted areas.

As the cooler weather has now arrived, which means grass growth potential has minimised going into dormancy, I ask if everyone could ensure they always carry a sand bucket to help repair divots and fix pitch marks on the greens.

I would be delighted to welcome any additional Members who would like to assist in our current volunteer program which runs on a Tuesday & Thursday.

Thanks to all Members for your patience throughout this construction period, and happy golfing.

Luke Telford - Superintendent

Catering Update

For the last five years North Ryde Golf Club has thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the Chinese style menu and most importantly being served by the wonderful hosts Ueli, Shirley and their team.

As you would be well aware, the Club has consistently updated and upgraded the services and offerings to our members and guests and to this end it is felt that Catering is the next step in the evolution of the Club.

Recognising the need to update and improve the catering offering for members and guests your Board and Management sought the expertise of an independent Catering industry professional.  The consultative process concentrated on maximising the optimal offering and to this end, the findings of the process disclosed that a more diversified offering is required.

Accordingly, we have taken the next important step in updating and looking to improve the catering provided at your Club by going out to tender.  As part of the process we expect to update the kitchen and equipment to set the Club up for the next chapter, to stay relevant and provide the best offering which members and their guests should expect to enjoy at their Club.

Naturally we have asked Ueli and his team to tender for this next stage, so stay tuned as we undertake this important process.

Training and Safety

Recently staff undertook Evacuation refresher training.  This gave us all the opportunity to again put safety, first aid and the need to look out for each other in the spotlight.  Most opportune after the week Sydney and for that matter the world has experienced.  How precious life is!

From the tragedy at Bondi Junction we learned about the presence of mind displayed by numerous shopkeepers in jumping to the defence of the customers in their stores and how they locked down.

In the event of an emergency at North Ryde Golf Club, rest assured that we too are prepared.  In this instance, please stay calm and wait for instructions.  While we do everything to prevent major incidences, as we are all aware, it is fool-hardy not to be ready.

One of our very talented members, Norm Spalding has previously run certified first aid classes for the staff and we are looking to undertake training again.  In addition to this, Norm has offered to run an abridged 90 minute basic course for interested members to upskill them. The member course will cover basic fist aid, CPR and is aimed at potentially assisting friends and family including even perhaps grandchildren.  We are looking to undertake the member course on a Sunday.  Could members who may be interested please let the Office know either by dropping in or via email.  No date has yet been fixed but we are seeking expressions of interest first.
